Holy House of Hospitality! (1 Peter 4:9)
New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church proudly hosted the inaugural 2025 MLK Justice Brunch, a powerful and impactful event bringing together over 50 community members to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and raise awareness about the devastating impact of gun violence.
Special thanks to Presiding Chairwoman Marsha Moberley and Commissioner Paul Kiel, whose participation enriched the dialogue and inspired collective action.
The brunch also marked the unveiling of the Garden of Grief and Tree of Trauma Memorial, in partnership with Texas Impact, Clergy for Safe Cities, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, First Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Peace Fellowship, and the Ministers Justice Coalition.
Vidas Robadas: Stolen Lives Memorial
As a centerpiece of the event, New Mount Rose Baptist Church debuted the Vidas Robadas (Stolen Lives) Memorial, a poignant reminder of gun violence victims in Tarrant County.
The exhibit, hosted at 2864 Mississippi Avenue, Fort Worth, features 286 T-shirts representing the 105 victims of gun homicides and unintentional shootings, along with 181 victims of gun suicides in 2023. Each shirt tells a story—a name, an age, a life stolen too soon.
Pastor Kyev Tatum emphasized the importance of the memorial:
“Each of these T-shirts represents someone’s child, sibling, or parent. As a community, we must do more to prevent gun violence, particularly among youth and children of color. This exhibit is a call to action for all of us to do better.”
Next Steps
The exhibit will travel to Austin on February 27, 2025, to join other memorials from across Texas in a statewide display at the Capitol. This public display will coincide with a rally and visits to lawmakers’ offices, advocating for common-sense gun safety legislation, including:
• HB 528: Strengthen Secure Storage laws to prevent gun suicides and unintentional shootings.
• HB 1556: Raise the age for purchasing semiautomatic rifles from 18 to 21.
• Oppose dangerous rollbacks like:
• HB 162: Blocking recognition of Extreme Risk Protection Orders.
• HB 259: Deregulating short-barreled rifles and shotguns.
• SB 83: Allowing firearms on school property.
• HB 1337: Recognizing out-of-state carry licenses universally.
This initiative, in collaboration with MOMS Demand Action, Texas Gun Sense, and others, seeks to protect lives and prevent future tragedies.

Together, let us honor Dr. King’s legacy by building a safer, more just community for all.
Congratulations on an outstanding and inspiring event!
