Fun Over Guns at the 3rd Annual Rube Foster Pitch, Hit, & Run Invitational
Pastor Kyev Tatum, New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church, FW Parks & Recreation and the Black On Base Negro League proudly present the 3rd Annual Rube Foster Pitch, Hit, & Run Invitational, a dynamic event uniting sportsmanship, history, and community on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Gateway Park in Fort Worth, Texas. This year, the Invitational incorporates the Fun Over Guns Initiative, delivering a powerful message of hope, unity, and opportunity through the game of baseball and softball.
Honoring Rube Foster: The Father of Black Baseball
The event pays tribute to Andrew “Rube” Foster, an iconic trailblazer and visionary in the world of baseball. Known as the “Father of Black Baseball,” Foster founded the Negro National League in 1920, creating a platform for African American athletes to showcase their talents despite the segregation of the time.
Long before founding the league, Foster displayed his legendary pitching skills as part of the Fort Worth Colts in 1901 and 1902. While playing in Fort Worth, Foster honed his craft and established himself as a rising star, laying the foundation for a career that would later revolutionize the sport. His time in Fort Worth serves as a powerful reminder of the city’s role in baseball history and its ongoing legacy of fostering talent and excellence.
What Is the Pitch, Hit, & Run Invitational?
The Rube Foster Pitch, Hit, & Run Invitational is a proud collaboration with Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Pitch, Hit & Run, Texas Rangers Baseball, and the City of Fort Worth Parks and Recreation programs, offering boys and girls ages 7-14 a chance to showcase their baseball and softball skills. This free event tests participants in three essential areas:
1. Pitching – Accuracy in throwing strikes to a designated target.
2. Hitting – Power and precision of hits from a stationary tee.
3. Running – Speed in a timed sprint from base to base.
Top performers will have the opportunity to advance to the Team Championship and potentially compete during the 2025 MLB World Series Finals, shining on baseball’s biggest stage.
Fun Over Guns Initiative: A Celebration of Life and Community
In addition to celebrating Rube Foster’s legacy, this year’s Invitational highlights the Fun Over Guns Initiative, a community-driven effort to provide youth with alternatives to violence. Through sports, mentorship, and engagement, Fun Over Guns empowers young people to make positive choices and build brighter futures.
