The issue of Black land loss in Texas is not just a matter of property; it is a question of justice, history, and the preservation of cultural and generational wealth. The systemic theft of Black-owned land has long plagued our state, leaving families disenfranchised and communities fractured. In 2025, the movement Black Land in White Hands: Exposing Land Grabbers in Texas aims to shine a light on this enduring injustice and demand accountability and restoration.
A Painful Legacy of Land Theft
From the end of Reconstruction through the present day, Black Texans have faced a relentless assault on their land ownership. Through legal loopholes, predatory practices, and outright fraud, countless Black families have been stripped of property that was rightfully theirs. This is not ancient history—it continues to this day, with heirs’ property disputes, fraudulent deeds, and gentrification disproportionately affecting Black landowners.
The consequences are staggering. Land represents not only a home but also generational wealth, community stability, and cultural identity. The theft of Black land is a theft of the future itself, perpetuating cycles of poverty and disenfranchisement that ripple through generations.
The Movement: From January to May
In 2025, the Black Land in White Hands initiative will take decisive action to expose land grabbers and demand justice for Black landowners in Texas. The movement will unfold across three pivotal events:
1. The Day: National Day for Racial Healing – January 21, 2025
On January 21, 2025, New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Worth will host a forum to address this crisis. Activists, historians, legal experts, and affected families will gather to discuss the systemic roots of Black land theft and explore solutions. This event will kickstart a statewide conversation about the need to protect Black landownership and empower families to reclaim their property.
2. The March: Advocacy at the Texas Capitol – March 2025
In March, the movement will take to the streets of Austin with a March to the Capitol, demanding legislative action to protect Black landowners. Participants will call for policy reforms, including protections for heirs’ property, transparency in land transactions, and stronger penalties for predatory practices. This march will serve as a rallying cry for justice, urging lawmakers to stand against land grabbers and uphold the rights of Black Texans.
3. The Memorial: Honoring Black Landowners – May 2025
The movement will culminate in May with a Memorial in Millican, a site deeply tied to Black history and the struggle for justice. This solemn event will honor the legacy of Black landowners who fought to preserve their property against all odds. It will also serve as a reminder that the fight is far from over and that future generations depend on our collective efforts to protect their inheritance.
Call to Action
The theft of Black land is not a Black issue; it is a human rights issue, an economic justice issue, and a Texas issue. This movement calls on every Texan—regardless of race, background, or political affiliation—to stand against the exploitation of vulnerable communities.
