Texas Buffalo Soldiers Association to Welcome National Veteran Leaders for Memorial Weekend Honor Project on May 16th.
FORT WORTH, TEXAS — The Texas Buffalo Soldiers Association proudly announces that the Travis Manion Foundation and the Warriors Remembrance and Research Foundation will join us as special guests on Saturday, May 16, 2026, the weekend preceding Memorial Day, at historic New Trinity Cemetery in Haltom City, Texas (https://www.wfaa.com/article/news/local/tarrant-county/forgotten-black-cemetery-restored-honoring-more-than-500-buffalo-soldiers-tarrant-county-texas/287-a51ba10a-e803-42ff-9f89-e9388d5802c9).
This solemn and service-driven gathering will bring together veterans, Gold Star families, civic leaders, students, faith communities, and volunteers for a powerful day of restoration and remembrance. Together, we will honor more than 500 military veterans laid to rest at New Trinity Cemetery — including Buffalo Soldiers, World War I and II veterans, and Tuskegee Airmen whose courage helped shape American history (https://www.cbsnews.com/texas/video/hundreds-of-black-veterans-honored-at-new-trinity-cemetery/).
Honoring Service Through Action
Founded in memory of 1stLt Travis Manion, USMC, who was killed in Iraq in 2007, the Travis Manion Foundation is a nationally respected, veteran-led nonprofit guided by its enduring motto:
“If Not Me, Then Who…”
Through its nationally recognized Honor Project, TMF restores the graves of fallen heroes, installs American flags, and mobilizes communities to lead through character and service. Their partnership at New Trinity Cemetery represents a meaningful collaboration between national veteran leadership and local historic preservation (https://www.cbsnews.com/texas/video/hundreds-of-black-veterans-honored-at-new-trinity-cemetery/).
The Warriors Remembrance and Research Foundation will work alongside TMF and local partners to research, document, and elevate the stories of veterans buried at the cemetery — many of whom returned home to segregation and inequality, yet served this nation with unwavering dignity and patriotism.
A Sacred Site of National Significance
New Trinity Cemetery stands as one of North Texas’ most historic African American cemeteries and a revered resting place for veterans spanning conflicts from the Civil War to the War on Terror. Among them are Buffalo Soldiers who protected America’s frontiers and advanced the cause of freedom under extraordinary adversity (https://www.keranews.org/news/2025-11-11/black-veterans-honored-at-newly-restored-historic-haltom-city-cemetery).
Recent restoration efforts, led by community volunteers and local partners, have revitalized the grounds. The May 16 service initiative will build upon that progress through:
- Installation of commemorative honor coins
- Placement of bronze flag holders
- Raising of new American flags
- Veteran documentation and historical research
- Youth engagement through hands-on civic service
A Call to Serve Before Memorial Day
The Texas Buffalo Soldiers Association invites veterans, JROTC cadets, students, researchers, faith leaders, and community members to take part in this historic day of tribute and service (https://www.star-telegram.com/news/local/article312880681.html).
As our nation approaches its 250th anniversary, this gathering serves as both remembrance and renewal — ensuring that the legacy of Black military service is preserved, honored, and passed forward to future generations.
“This is more than ceremony,” organizers shared. “It is restoration. It is responsibility. And it is our collective duty to ensure these heroes are never forgotten.”
