THE INAUGURAL BUFFALO SOLDIERS MLK DAY OF SERVICE
New Trinity Cemetery • Haltom City, Texas. Saturday, January 17, 2026 at 10AM.
More than 35 Texans braved harsh winter conditions to retrieve over 500 wreaths and carefully preserve American flags during the Inaugural Buffalo Soldiers MLK Day of Service, held Saturday, January 17, 2026, at historic New Trinity Cemetery. What might have been a quiet, overlooked morning instead became a powerful demonstration of remembrance, reverence, and collective resolve.
On a day dedicated to honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the community gathered not merely to commemorate, but to act. This was more than symbolic service. It was sacred labor. Hands stiff from the cold worked with intention, lifting wreaths, straightening flags, and tending to sacred ground that holds generations of Black history, sacrifice, and resilience. Each wreath retrieved and every flag preserved affirmed a shared truth: these lives, these stories, and this resting place still matter.
The historic day of service was sponsored by New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church of Fort Worth, the Texas Buffalo Soldiers Association, and American Legion Post 655 of Haltom City. Volunteers and representatives stood shoulder to shoulder from Watauga, North Richland Hills, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Higgins House of Rest, Texas Parks and Wildlife Buffalo Soldiers Heritage and Outreach Program, Bow tie Boys of Garland, Skills City Resilience Responders, and the Ministers Justice Coalition of Texas—proving that when dignity is at stake, unity rises.
This inaugural MLK Day of Service carried deep and lasting significance. It honored the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers, the ancestors laid to rest at New Trinity Cemetery, and Dr. King’s enduring belief that service is the rent we pay for living. Through their care for this hallowed ground, the community made a clear declaration: history will not be forgotten, heroes will not be erased, and dignity will be defended—one faithful act of service at a time.
Friends of New Trinity Cemetery extend heartfelt gratitude to every partner, volunteer, and supporter whose commitment continues to advance the Digging for Dignity Initiative. Together, this community is restoring more than a cemetery—it is restoring memory, honor, and pride.
