For forty years, Pastor Kyev Tatum has answered Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s call not merely with eloquent words, but with faithful, sustained action. From his early engagement at the University of North Texas in 1986 to the present-day distribution of more than 50,000 pounds of food through the MLK Hunger Bowl in 2026, Pastor Tatum’s life and ministry are guided by one unwavering conviction: “I just want to do God’s will.” That calling continues to shape a unified and purposeful MLK Weekend—anchored in service, faith, education, and justice.

The weekend begins on Saturday, January 17, 2026, with the Buffalo Soldiers MLK Day of Service at historic New Trinity Cemetery. Community members gather to honor legacy through hands-on service, carefully collecting wreaths and preserving American flags from the resting places of more than 500 Black military veterans. This sacred labor affirms that remembrance is not passive—it is a responsibility owed to those who served, sacrificed, and were too often forgotten.

On Sunday, January 18, Pastor Tatum leads MLK Justice Sunday at New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church, calling the congregation to embody Dr. King’s vision of righteousness, reconciliation, and sacrificial love. Rooted in worship and the Word, this gathering reminds the faithful that justice is both a spiritual mandate and a public witness, inseparable from authentic discipleship.

The observance reaches its culmination on Monday, January 19. Pastor Tatum is expected to participate in the MLK Day Lunch & Learn, hosted by Black Leadership of Mesquite at Word of Life Church in Mesquite, Texas, where education, dialogue, and civic responsibility take center stage. Later that afternoon, New Mount Rose hosts its signature MLK Hunger Bowl at 3:00 PM. With the support of Volunteers of America, Skills City Resilience Responders, and trusted partners, the church distributes 250 free coats, shoes, and socks, along with over 50,000 pounds of food, made possible through partnerships with Midwest Food Bank, Gateway Church, and Operation Blessings.

Together, these sacred moments form a comprehensive MLK Weekend experience—linking service through the Buffalo Soldiers, spiritual grounding at New Mount Rose, education and leadership development through the Lunch & Learn in Mesquite, and direct community action through the Hunger Bowl. Marking forty years of faithful engagement, Pastor Kyev Tatum’s journey stands as a living testimony to Dr. King’s enduring call: to serve humanity, pursue justice, and do God’s will—steadfastly, humbly, and without wavering.
