A GLORIOUS GLIMPSE OF GOD’S GLORY: The 2026 MLK Day Holiday Weekend United Morningside to Mesquite To Reignite Dr. King’s Poor People’s Campaign.

FORT WORTH, TEXAS — The 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Weekend carried profound spiritual and historical significance for Pastor Kyev Tatum, who marked 40 years of faithful engagement in MLK commemorations—four decades of answering the call to justice, service, and sacrificial love.

Introduced to the philosophy and prophetic witness of Dr. King in 1986, Pastor Tatum has spent a lifetime translating belief into action. This year’s observance stood as a living testimony to King’s vision, uniting faith, history, and public service across North Texas. Through a cemetery cleanup, a justice-centered worship service, and the distribution of life-sustaining resources, the weekend embodied Dr. King’s Poor People’s Campaign in motion.

Honoring the Past, Serving the Present

The weekend began on Saturday, January 17, with the Inaugural Buffalo Soldiers MLK Day of Service at historic New Trinity Cemetery in Haltom City, Texas. Volunteers—children, clergy, veterans, and community members—braved bitter winds to retrieve wreaths and preserve American flags marking the graves of military heroes.

Participants were immersed in living history through a powerful presentation by Mr. Allan Mack of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Buffalo Soldiers Heritage and Outreach Program, who brought to life the courage and contributions of the Buffalo Soldiers. Supported by New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church, American Legion Post 655, and the Texas Buffalo Soldiers Association, the event will now stand as an annual act of remembrance and restoration, following December’s Wreaths Across America.

A Wake-Up Call to the Church

On MLK Justice Sunday, New Mount Rose transformed its sanctuary into a visual testimony of both need and hope. More than 50,000 pounds of food were placed on display, confronting the realities of poverty in Fort Worth and Tarrant County.

Pastor Tatum delivered a stirring message titled “When Your Living Is Not in Vain”, calling the church to reclaim its moral authority and lead a renewed Poor People’s Campaign. The sermon challenged believers to move beyond ceremony toward courageous advocacy—becoming the voice of justice in an unjust world.

From Teaching to Tangible Change

On Monday, January 19, the official MLK Holiday, the day began in Mesquite, Texas, with the 2026 MLK Lunch and Learn, sponsored by the African American Leadership Alliance of Mesquite and hosted at Word of Life Church. Pastor Tatum preached “When the Battle Is Bigger Than Your Belief” from 2 Chronicles 20:20–25, offering a timely word of courage for communities facing overwhelming odds.

From the pulpit, he moved swiftly to the people—leading what became the largest MLK Hunger Bowl to date. Thanks to Midwest Food Bank, Volunteers of America, Gateway Church, Operation Warm, Subaru, Skills City Resilience Responders and New Mount Rose, families received new coats, shoes, socks, blankets, and over 50,000 pounds of food, meeting urgent needs while affirming human dignity. The MLK Hunger Bowl will continue throughout the year, coupling direct service with advocacy for public policies that ensure no child grows up in poverty.

A Sacred Conclusion

The weekend culminated with an evening of reverence and remembrance as New Mount Rose hosted Dr. Kim Agoro for Bringing Back the Classics: Spirituals and Hymns Revisited. Through song, the community journeyed back into the sacred soundtrack of the struggle—lifting voices that once sustained generations in their pursuit of freedom and dignity.

A Question That Still Calls Us Forward

The 2026 MLK Holiday Weekend offered more than events—it offered a glimpse of God’s glory, revealed when hundreds of people came together with one purpose. It answered the enduring question posed by Dr. King and first taught by Jesus centuries ago:

“What are you doing for others?”

“The MLK Day of Service has become a beacon of hope for our neighbors,” said Pastor Kyev Tatum, founding coordinator of the 2026 MLK Day of Service Weekend. “God has smiled on us this year, and we are grateful for the life, love, and lasting legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”
