The New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church of Fort Worth, in collaborationi with the Black Mothers Forum of Arizona and the Ministers Justice Coalition of Texas, is proud to announce the formation of the Texas MicroSchools Collective (TXM). On Thursday, August 28, 2025, the MJC voted unanimously to approve the formation of the Texas MicroSchools Collective in partnership with Black Mothers Forum.

This groundbreaking initiative will bring together churches and community partners across Texas to plan, plant, and promote faith-based microschools as part of our Circle of Churches Collective. The hub of this effort will be located at New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church, 2864 Mississippi Avenue, Fort Worth, Texas.

What is a Microschool?

A microschool is a small, flexible, and personalized learning environment—often serving fewer than 15 students—that provides an alternative to traditional education. Rooted in the spirit of the Rosenwald one-room schoolhouse (https://blacktexans.blogspot.com/2025/03/the-fathers-of-school-choice-for-black.html, microschools emphasize:

  • Small Size: Intimate settings with low student-to-teacher ratios.
  • Personalization: Tailored learning experiences that match each child’s pace, style, and strengths.
  • Flexibility: Adaptable curricula and structures responsive to community needs.
  • Community-Based: Anchored in churches, homes, and local centers to meet families where they are.
  • Innovation: Freedom from rigid bureaucracy, allowing creative approaches to teaching and learning.

How They Differ from Traditional Schools

Unlike large, standardized school systems, microschools provide:

  • Stronger student–teacher relationships.
  • Wider variety in curriculum and teaching styles, including project-based learning and technology integration.
  • Independent governance free from excessive bureaucracy.
  • Creative models of operation, from independent private schools to partnerships with churches and homeschool networks.

The Black Mothers Forum Model

The Black Mothers Forum (BMF) has pioneered a microschool approach that centers on the needs of Black—and increasingly Latine—students who often face challenges in traditional public schools. Their success in Arizona has sparked growing interest in Texas, inspiring families and community leaders to replicate and expand this model through the Texas MicroSchools Collective.

Why This Matters

Microschools are transforming education by breaking old assumptions about governance, funding, performance, and educator preparation. As these models take root in Texas, the TXM Collective will be committed to creating sustainable structures that empower parents, support educators, and provide children with safe, nurturing, and effective learning spaces.
