FACE YOUR ACE WITH GRACE: Becoming Trauma Informed at Skills City, USA.
Students and families at Skills City, USA spent meaningful time at the Women’s Center of Fort Worth to discuss how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are shaping brain development, emotional health, and long-term wellbeing.
Adverse Childhood Experiences are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood, such as abuse, neglect, violence in the home, parental incarceration, substance abuse, and poverty. Research shows that the more ACEs a child experiences, the higher the risk of long-term physical and mental health problems, including depression, substance abuse, chronic disease, and difficulties in school and work. However, early intervention, safe relationships, and supportive environments can build resilience and help break cycles of generational trauma.
Katherine Collier Esser, Assistant Director of Research & Training Services, shared the importance of becoming trauma-informed—learning to recognize the signs of trauma, respond with compassion, and create supportive systems for healing. She emphasized that understanding ACEs is not about labels but about empowerment: helping individuals realize that their past does not define their future.
The main takeaway for students was powerful and personal: you are important enough to get help, to heal, and to rise above the effects of generational trauma.
