The Prayer Room Chaplain Quarters. Restoring the Hope in the House.

The Prayer Room Chaplain Quarters. Restoring the Hope in the House.

Before a young soul finds their voice…

Before a bean is roasted, a book is read, or a dream is dared…

We must first restore the house where it all begins.

This isn’t just a renovation.

This is a resurrection.

A revival of memory, mission, and meaning.

This House Is Holy Ground

Perched on sacred soil in Fort Worth’s historic 76104 zip code stands a century-old home—weathered by time but not by purpose. Once the childhood home of Pastor Kyev P. Tatum, Sr., it now carries a higher calling: to become The Prayer Room Chaplain Quarters, a sanctuary where history, hope, and holy coffee converge.

It is here that the untold stories of Buffalo Soldier Chaplains will live again—not as artifacts of a forgotten past, but as blueprints for a bold, faith-filled future.

Why This Restoration Matters

The Chaplain Quarters is not just a house—it is a sacred symbol.

It stands in tribute to the Black chaplains of the Buffalo Soldier regiments—preachers, professors, protectors, and prophets—whose faith fortified soldiers, whose words built warriors, and whose example taught a generation to lead with love and courage.

Restoring this house is a sacred act.

A public proclamation that our stories are worth saving.

That our youth deserve to dream in dignity.

That our legacy will not be buried—it will be built upon.

What This Restoration Will Make Possible

Preserve the Legacy

Honor the lives and lessons of Chaplains Henry Plummer, Allen Allensworth, Theophilus Steward, George Prioleau, William Anderson—and now, Pastor Kyev P. Tatum, Sr.—whose moral leadership shaped both military and American history.

Ignite Literacy & Leadership

Equip youth with reading, writing, financial literacy, and critical thinking skills—all rooted in purpose, pride, and cultural identity.

Launch the Coffee Lab

Train future baristas, entrepreneurs, and community builders through specialty coffee roasting, customer service, and real-world workforce readiness.

Rebuild Community Through Faith

Establish a hub where faith, economic justice, and heritage learning collide—breeding hope in a neighborhood long denied investment.

The Urgency Is Real

This 100-year-old home can’t wait.

Every day delayed is a dream deferred.

We urgently need funding for:

New roofing and safe electrical systems

Modern plumbing and clean water access

ADA-compliant accessibility upgrades

Careful preservation of original craftsmanship

We cannot unlock tomorrow’s potential until we restore yesterday’s foundation.

How You Can Join the Legacy

We’re calling on believers, builders, and bridge-makers.

People who know that a restored house can heal a neighborhood.

That a single space can shape a generation.

Together, We Will Rebuild

The Prayer Room Chaplain Quarters will not just be restored—it will be reborn.

It will stand as a monument to the faith of our ancestors and a launchpad for the futures of our children.

Because this is more than a project.

It’s a movement.

It’s a mission.

It’s a ministry of memory and hope.

Let’s restore the house.

Let’s restore the hope.

Let’s brew a new beginning—together.

HOPE IN THE HOUSE: The Prayer Room Chaplain Quarters: Where History, Heritage, and Holy Coffee Converge.

On the hillside of Fort Worth’s historic southside neighborhood in the 76104 zip code—where legacy and leadership are being reborn—one man is reimagining what it means to honor the past while preparing the next generation for the future. Pastor Kyev Tatum, a native son and civic soldier, is transforming his 100-year-old childhood home into a one-of-a-kind training ground that fuses the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers with the booming world of specialty coffee.

Welcome to The Prayer Room Chaplain Quarters: Where History and Specialty Coffee Connect.

This visionary project is converting the historic home—built in 1924 and known as The Prayer Room—into a youth coffee lab, life skills incubator, and heritage learning center. Pastor Tatum, who also serves as Chaplain for the Texas Buffalo Soldiers Association, has long believed in the power of faith-fueled, unconventional education.

“I want to teach our kids that selling coffee can be just as lucrative as selling dope—it’s the same grams, just a different grind,” says Pastor Tatum. “But this grind comes with purpose, pride, and a paycheck that doesn’t come with prison.”

Now, he’s expanding the vision to include a powerful and often overlooked piece of military history: the story of Black chaplains who served with the Buffalo Soldiers during the 19th century. Called The Chaplain Quarters, the initiative honors the vital role these spiritual leaders played—not just offering prayers, but teaching soldiers how to read, write, and lead.

A Legacy of Learning and Leading

From the appointment of Chaplain Allen Allensworth in 1884—the first Black chaplain commissioned by the U.S. Army—to the present-day ministry of Pastor Tatum, Black chaplains have been central to the growth, discipline, and dignity of Black soldiers. Often serving dual roles as pastors and educators, they were moral anchors and literacy guides during times of immense challenge and change.

“The Chaplain Quarters is about continuing that legacy,” says Pastor Tatum. “It’s a sacred space where youth will not only learn how to roast coffee but also how to read, write, think critically, and carry themselves with dignity. It’s workforce development with a soul.”

This bold, faith-rooted initiative is also part of Pastor Tatum’s broader Skills City, USA movement—designed to create viable pathways to economic freedom and educational success for youth in Fort Worth’s most underserved communities.

Pastor Kyev P. Tatum, Sr. is a Fort Worth native, faith leader, and visionary builder whose work spans pulpits, protests, and public policy. A graduate of the University of North Texas School of Community Service in Denton, Texas, and a product of Fort Worth’s Morningside neighborhood, Pastor Tatum has devoted his life to grassroots empowerment, educational equity, and economic transformation.

He is the founding architect of Skills City, USA and The Prayer Room & Chaplain Quarters initiative—bold platforms designed to uplift marginalized communities through workforce readiness, faith formation, and cultural restoration.

As Pastor of New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church and Chaplain for the Texas Buffalo Soldiers Association, Tatum draws inspiration from the historical figures who shaped Black progress, while paving new roads for the next generation to thrive.

Known for his prophetic voice, strategic vision, and unapologetic courage, Pastor Tatum remains one of Texas’s most impactful and outspoken grassroots leaders. With The Chaplain Quarters, he brings together past and present, hope and history, grind and grace—brewing up a future worth fighting for.
