Write After School Literacy Program Makes America Read Again: Inner-City Churches Leading the Charge in Literacy.

In an effort to bridge the literacy gap and empower young minds, Inner-City churches across the nation are opening their doors to provide after-school reading programs designed to foster a love for learning. This initiative, called the Write After School Literacy Program, will create safe and supportive spaces where students can enhance their reading and writing skills under the guidance of dedicated tutors and mentors. By combining structured literacy instruction with creative exploration, this program aims to instill confidence, improve academic performance, and develop critical thinking skills that will serve students throughout their lives.

A Vision for Empowerment: The Write After School Literacy Program

The Write After School Literacy Program is the brainchild of Pastor Kyev Tatum, New Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church, and the Ministers Justice Coalition of Texas. This initiative was born out of a deep commitment to addressing the literacy gap in underserved communities, recognizing that education is the key to economic empowerment, social justice, and personal fulfillment.

Pastor Kyev Tatum has dedicated his life to advocating for educational equity, community development, and youth empowerment. With over three decades of experience in public policy, program development, and grassroots organizing, he has been a steadfast leader in the fight for justice and opportunity. Understanding the critical role literacy plays in shaping a child’s future, Pastor Tatum and his partners launched Write After School to ensure that every child, regardless of background, has access to the resources and support needed to thrive academically and beyond.

The Power of Reading and Writing Every Day

Literacy is the foundation of all learning. When students engage in daily reading and writing, they develop essential skills that go far beyond the classroom.

Regular reading strengthens comprehension, expands vocabulary, and enhances cognitive abilities, allowing students to process and analyze information more effectively.

Writing every day helps improve communication skills, encourages self-expression, and reinforces grammar, sentence structure, and clarity.

Through Write After School, students will be encouraged to read books that align with their personal interests, helping them see reading not as a chore but as an exciting journey of discovery. Whether it’s exploring historical figures, diving into science fiction, or writing poetry, students will learn that literacy is a gateway to their dreams and aspirations. By connecting reading and writing with their passions, they will naturally become more engaged and motivated to learn.

A Community Approach to Literacy

Inner-City  churches have long been pillars of education and empowerment in their communities. By providing a nurturing and faith-based environment for literacy development, these churches are ensuring that young people have access to the support and resources they need to succeed.

The Write After School program will feature:

One-on-One and Small Group Tutoring – Personalized instruction to meet each student’s specific needs.

Mentorship from Community Leaders – Guidance from professionals, educators, and church members who serve as role models.

Interactive Reading Circles – Engaging discussions that build comprehension and critical thinking.

Creative Writing Workshops – Encouraging students to express themselves through stories, poetry, and essays.

Parent and Community Engagement – Involving families to create a culture of literacy at home.

The Long-Term Impact of Literacy

When students develop strong reading and writing skills, they are better equipped for academic success, career readiness, and civic engagement. Literacy is directly linked to higher graduation rates, increased job opportunities, and a greater ability to advocate for oneself and one’s community.

The Write After School program is not just about improving test scores—it’s about empowering students to become lifelong learners, confident communicators, and leaders in their communities.

By Making America Read Again, Inner-City churches are not only supporting the next generation but also strengthening the entire community. Through Write After School, they are investing in the future—one book, one sentence, and one inspired mind at a time.

A Mission to Make America Read Again

Through Write After School, Pastor Tatum and his coalition are not only addressing academic disparities but also fostering a culture of lifelong learning. The program is built on the belief that reading and writing every day can transform lives by improving communication skills, boosting confidence, and opening doors to limitless possibilities.

By partnering with local educators, churches, and community leaders, Write After School creates a holistic learning environment where students are encouraged to explore their interests, engage in meaningful discussions, and develop their creative voices. The program’s unique approach integrates mentorship, faith-based support, and hands-on learning to make literacy education both accessible and inspiring.

As Inner-City  churches continue their historic role as centers of education and empowerment, Write After School stands as a beacon of hope, reminding us that literacy is not just a skill—it’s a pathway to freedom, opportunity, and a brighter future for all.

The mission of the Write After School Literacy Program is clear: Make America Read Again.
