Pastor Kyev Tatum Hosts “Make America Read Again” Workshop to Transform Black Churches into Literacy Hubs


Fort Worth, TX – March 24, 2025 – With over 80% of Black students in Texas reading below grade level, faith leaders and community advocates are stepping up to address this urgent crisis. Pastor Kyev Tatum, a civil rights leader and education reform advocate with over 30 years of experience, is leading a faith-based literacy movement designed to equip Black churches as after-school and summer reading hubs.


The Make America Read Again workshop will train faith leaders, mentors, and volunteers to support literacy development by integrating biblically-centered Black history, structured reading programs, and hot meals to ensure that every child has the tools they need to succeed.



“Every child can learn to read when placed in the right environment and taught according to their unique learning style,” said Pastor Kyev Tatum. “Our churches have always been at the forefront of social change. Now, we must rise again to ensure that our children have the literacy skills necessary to shape their own futures.”

Pastor Kyev P. Tatum, Sr. is a seasoned civil rights leader, educator, and community advocate with over 30 years of experience in education reform. He has dedicated his life to uplifting marginalized communities through policy, program development, and faith-driven advocacy. Pastor Tatum is the president of the Ministers Justice Coalition of Texas and has worked alongside Texas A&M University, the U.S. Small Business Administration, and faith-based organizations to close education gaps and create impactful youth programs. His leadership has transformed churches into centers of literacy, mentorship, and economic empowerment.

Workshop Overview


With over 80% of Black students in Texas unable to read at grade level, faith leaders and community advocates must take action. Make America Read Again is a call to mobilize Black churches as after-school and summer reading hubs, equipping children with essential literacy skills while fostering a strong cultural and spiritual foundation.


This faith-based literacy movement will:

• Train and mobilize adult mentors.

• Provide biblically centered Black history lessons.

• Offer hot meals to support learning and development.


Through strategic partnerships with clergy, educators, and community leaders, we will transform churches into centers of academic and personal empowerment.


Workshop Goals

• Mobilize faith leaders to address literacy disparities.

• Establish Black churches as community reading hubs.

• Recruit and train mentors to teach based on students’ learning styles.

• Provide culturally relevant literacy materials incorporating biblical Black history.

• Create a holistic support system, including mentorship, literacy resources, and hot meals.


Workshop Agenda (2-3 Hours)


1. Welcome & Opening Prayer (15 min)

• Introduction by Pastor Kyev Tatum

• Scriptural Foundation: Proverbs 4:7 – “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”

• Overview of the literacy crisis and faith-based solutions.


2. Understanding the Crisis (30 min)

• Presentation on literacy statistics and the impact on the Black community.

• Testimonies from students, parents, and educators.

• Discussion: What are the root causes of reading struggles?


3. Engaging Faith Leaders: The Church’s Role in Education (30 min)

• The historical role of the Black Church in education.

• How to structure church-based reading programs.

• Panel Discussion with Faith Leaders:

• How to integrate reading ministries.

• Overcoming challenges in launching literacy initiatives.

• Creating safe, nurturing spaces for learning.


4. Black Churches as Reading Hubs (30 min)

• Utilizing church spaces for structured learning (Sunday school rooms, fellowship halls, etc.).

• Developing faith-based reading curricula for young learners.

• Partnering with schools, libraries, and community organizations.


5. Recruiting & Training Mentors (30 min)

• Key characteristics of effective mentors/tutors.

• Teaching strategies tailored to different learning styles.

• Background checks and safety measures.


6. Biblical Black History & Literacy Integration (30 min)

• Teaching literacy through culturally relevant, biblically based content.

• Highlighting Black biblical figures and historical narratives.

• Recommended faith-based reading materials to support literacy development.


7. Providing Hot Meals & Wraparound Support (15 min)

• How food insecurity affects learning and academic performance.

• Partnering with local food banks and meal programs.

• Ensuring every child receives nutritious meals before learning.


8. Call to Action & Next Steps (30 min)

• How to launch a church-based reading hub.

• Connecting with resources, funding, and training networks.

• Closing prayer, commitment pledge, and final remarks.

Pastor Kyev P. Tatum, Sr. is a civil rights leader, educator, and community advocate with over 30 years of experience in education reform. A firm believer in faith-driven social change, he has dedicated his life to uplifting marginalized communities through policy, program development, and public advocacy.


His work in closing education gaps has led to partnerships with schools, churches, and government agencies to create impactful youth literacy programs. Through his leadership, churches have transformed into community hubs providing literacy training, mentorship, and economic development opportunities.


As the president of the Ministers Justice Coalition of Texas, Pastor Tatum has collaborated with Texas A&M University, the U.S. Small Business Administration, and numerous faith-based organizations to drive change.
